We had gone out to shoot the sunset in the Quiver Tree Forest near the lodge we were staying at in Keetmanshoop, Namibia. After the sun went down it got dark fast, and the stars lit up the African sky. It was just gorgeous. There was some light coming from a campground nearby, but it was fairly dim, at least to my eye. I set up my composition, focused on the near trees, and used a long exposure to capture the star light. After the first shot I could tell that the light from the campground was going to be a problem. I had to recompose my photo to keep the direct light out of the photo, which was difficult because I was using a wide angle lens. I took a number of photos that evening with different compositions, but this was my favorite one of the night. After I had processed it, I determined that the campground light that I had struggled against had actually improved the photo by adding depth to it. Go figure. I'll take good luck any day.
