It Makes A Big Splash - Glacier Calving Photograph Art Print

We cruised in our Zodiac boat along the front edge of this glacier in the northern fjords of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Though we were bundled up against the freezing arctic weather, it was still cold just sitting in the boat, waiting.

From time to time a loud crack, like a rifle report, would cause all our lenses to swing up toward the glacier, eager to catch the perfect moment. But it would just be a false alarm, ice falling somewhere out of sight. Then, another one, right in front of us. It was like it was happening in slow motion. A large chunk of ice, bigger than a bus, toppling off the front edge of the glacier. My camera was ready and focused.

I started shooting, filling my memory card with shot after shot as the splash thrown up from the calving ice grew larger and larger in my viewfinder. When the spash started to subside, our Zodiac driver started the motor and moved us to a safer distance, away from the resulting wave. I quickly scanned through the...
