Description
A photograph of Hoover Dam, located outside of Boulder City, Nevada and not far from Las Vegas. This image was taken from the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, part of the Hoover Dam Bypass built in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.
Hoover Dam was originally named Boulder Dam when it was dedicated in 1935. It was declared a Modern Civil Engineering Wonder of the United States in 1955 by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Hoover Dam impedes the waters of the Colorado River, forming Lake Mead and providing flood control and hydroelectric power. When full, Lake Mead is the largest reservoir by volume in the United States.
