Description
Lower Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon in northern Arizona near Page. It's generally much less crowded than Upper Antelope Canyon, which is located across the highway. Upper Antelope is crowded because it's more tourist-friendly -- it's wider, more level, and you can just walk into and through it (along with truckloads of tourists). Lower Antelope requires you to crawl down through this narrow crack in the ground and descend a series of ladders. After that the canyon is narrow and requires you to descend throughout its length. Access is more difficult, but the rewards are greater. It's a temple, a true treasure of the American Southwest.
Late in the year you don't get direct overhead sunlight in the canyon. It's the direct light that's responsible for those shafts of light seen in so many photos from Antelope Canyon. Instead, the canyon is lit by sunlight that enters at an angle and bounces back and forth off the red rock canyon walls, becoming more diffuse with every reflection. This is balanced with direct illumination from the blue sky, which provides the beautiful blue and purple tones present in this photo.
